About Ear Conditions

No one feels good when they have an earache. Babies and children are no exception, and it is even more difficult to tell what is wrong when they cannot tell you in their own words. As parents, we have to rely on the signs: tugging on the outside of the ear, crankiness, unexplained fever, crying, very little appetite, and visible discharge from the ears. Earaches can be caused by a number of issues, such as earwax blockage, foreign body/object in the ear, infection or bacteria in various parts of the ear, tonsillitis, sinus infection, and more. At Village Pediatrics in Plano, TX and the surrounding area, our highly-qualified, board-certified pediatricians, Dr. Hebbur and Dr. Okammor, will do their very best to see your child as soon as possible, if an ear infection is suspected. It is also important to note that children, who have no other symptoms other than fever, can still have an ear infection, and we can help confirm that as well.

Conditions and Symptoms

Common Earache

When our kid’s ears hurt, it is a pretty good indication of pressure from an ear infection. An earache can be eased with over-the-counter children’s pain reliever (follow all instructions), and if the pain persists, call your family’s pediatrician as soon as possible.

Swimmer's Ear

Swimmer's ear is a bacterial infection inside the outer ear canal from water left inside the ear that is painful when it becomes inflamed. The good news is that it can usually be cleared up with an over-the-counter swimmer's ear medication. When the infection spreads within the ear or won't go away, it may be time to call the doctor.

Recommended Treatments

Depending on your child's ear condition, our experienced physicians will make a diagnosis after a physical exam, and make recommendations for treatment. Antibiotics can be used to treat certain ear infections. In some cases, tubes may be placed in the ears to properly drain fluids. In extreme cases, surgery may be warranted for children with chronic ear infections.
